Last night's AGM down the Shed was well attended. Members were well impressed with the refurbishment progress over the last while. Chair John Shiner announced his resignation after 5 years in post and was presented with a nice bottle of Scapa in appreciation of his unwavering commitment. John will remain a valuable member. Dave Macdonald was elected new Chair, Steve Ray, Stephen Murray and Francis Edwards all remain in post as Treasurer, Secretary and Communications Officer respectively.

After a short summer break to allow for the various summer shows the Men’s Shed was back in action this weekend. As you can see from the photos the Men’s Shed had a very productive day and welcomed new members to the Shed. The refurbishment work is going well and we hope to be fully functional by the end of the year. On Saturday we enjoyed a cup of tea and a chat for the first time in their new shed. This Tuesday (23rd August) afternoon we are looking for volunteers to help complete the work on the roof – so if you are free do come along. Do keep up to date with the Men’s Shed here on own webpage.
Thank you for your ongoing support.

A recent Visitor: Recently we had a VIP visit from Orkney Constituency MSP, Liam McArthur, who stopped in after his island surgery to chat with members and view the refurbishment works to the Shed premises, the former recycling centre at Kettletoft. Liam spent a good hour on site and we enjoyed a convivial chat covering the works to date, our funding successes and our plans for the future. Liam offered us moral support and encouragement. He is a great fan and sees the benefits of the Shed’s movement, both for the local community and for those using the shed.

Men’s Shed in the News: The Scottish Parliament recently held a debate on the benefits of the invaluable contribution of the Men Shed movement. Christine Grahame opened the debate noting there were now 201 in Scotland, 129 fully open with the remainder in development. Liam McArthur couldn’t speak as he was the Depute Presiding Officer for the session but it was clear he had briefed his parliamentary colleague about his Sanday visit as she highlighted the success of the Orkney Shed in proving its worth to the wider community and made mention of the Sanday Shed being well advanced.
It was certainly encouraging, quite exciting even, to hear our name being highlighted in the Parliament and know it has been recorded for posterity! For anyone wishing to hear the debate it can be viewed here: https://youtu.be/tJ8xVUCYavk A further account can be had at https://theorkneynews.scot/2022/06/18/mens-sheds-praised-in-scottish-parliament/
Following the debate Liam McArthur MSP said:
“The Men’s Shed movement has been a largely undersung success story. It has made a life-changing impact on ‘shedders’ around the world, providing a sense of purpose and community and benefitting the communities in which Sheds have been established”.
So, things are moving along at the Shed post pandemic. As always, anyone who fancies coming along to help out please feel free to do so. You will find a few of us there usually Saturday afternoons from about 1.00-4.30pm. No particular skills needed and you’ll be made most welcome. Many hands make light work!
