Old Co-op stores refurbishment

Due to the pandemic, progress was slow and came to a halt at times. However, Steve continued with work behind the scenes to apply for and obtain funding for materials. Work also continued on the interminable applying and reapplying for service connection permissions. When getting together was allowed a lot of work was done on just clearing out the building and site from years of accumulated material. A wide variety of individuals joined in regularly or from time to time as other commitments/covid restrictions allowed.
Once materials started to arrive, work commenced on strapping and lining. Some members had done this before and some learned 'on the job' and pitched in in any way they could.
In gaps between bad weather and Covid restrictions, the cold and wet task of cleaning and patching the roof was tackled. The insulation on the inside of the walls and roof is now fitted and the final finishing plasterboard and ply surfaces are being secured along with the wiring for light and power. An electrical connection to the mains is imminent (12th July we hope) and plans are being made for drainage connection, fitting out the kitchen and the toilet. The windows remain to be tackled but it now seems conceivable that Sanday Shed will be completed!
Not many Sheds have a view like this!!
In  its previous lives our Shed was a shop, then a recycling centre before lying unused for 10 years. By the time we inherited it it was a ruined blockwork structure with leaking roof and windows. Over the last 3 years we have made in watertight, insulated it and created a workshop, kitchen and toilet space. Electricity and water have been reconnected so the building now has an inside tap, heating and lighting. Windows have either been replaced or re-fitted and we now have a double door access. It is still very much a work in progress as our photo gallery shows but we hope to be open, up and running before the end of 2023.
